About the artist, Sheila Preston-Ford

Sheila Preston-Ford Sheila Preston-Ford is an artist, children's book illustrator, and also an elementary art teacher. As a painter and illustrator Sheila works predominantly in watercolor and acrylic. Sheila paints in vibrant realistic color and loves contrast and light. Sheila's watercolors have been displayed in many shows and private collections throughout California, Nevada and Oregon.A Northern California native and nature lover, Sheila is most at home walking in the woods or near a tranquil river. She is a firefighter's wife and the mother of three. Recently Sheila's style has been going through a transition. "I used to paint what I saw, but lately I have been painting more what I feel. I hope my new works communicate a positive message and evoke feelings of hope.

Last summer, her hometown of Redding, California was ravaged by wildfires. The Carr Fire along with many other fires devastated the community and beautiful natural landscapes. Sheila has been collaborating with local artists and the organization Art From The Ashes to promote healing through art. Artists transform items taken out of the burned areas into new artistic creations. Sheila has helped with community workshops where artists facilitate healing through the creation and expression of art. She has made several three dimensional pieces of art from the reclaimed rubble. This new found medium, although somber, because of its source has been a huge inspiration for her. The limitations of the materials are a challenge, while at the same time it is exciting to let the items tell you what they want to be. From melted aluminum landscapes to glass dragons, her new creations are as varied as the materials she works with. Sheila says, "My personal response to this summer’s tragedy is a longing to see healing and to remind us all there is hope and renewal on the horizon. My works present a glimpse of what was lost, and a view of the coming rebirth."
